چکیده

This paper describes a method for determining the dynamical interaction between extended halo and spheroid components and an environmental disturbance. One finds that resonant interaction between a galaxy and passing interlopers or satellite companions can carry the disturbance inward, deep inside the halo, where it can perturb the disk. Applied to the Milky Way for example, the LMC and SMC appear to be sufficient to cause the observed Galactic warp and possibly seed other asymmetries. This is a multi-scale interaction in which the halo wake has a feature at roughly half the satellite orbital radius due to a 2:1 orbital resonance. The rotating disturbance then excites an m = 1 vertical disk mode which has the classic integral-sign morphology. A polar satellite orbit produces the largest warp and therefore the inferred LMC orbit is nearly optimal for maximum warp production. Both the magnitude and morphology of the response depend on the details of the disk and halo models. Most critically, a change in the halo profile will shift the resonant frequencies and response location and consequently alter the coupling to the bending disk. Increasing the halo support relative to the disk, a sub-maximal disk model, decreases the warp amplitude. Finally, the results and prognosis for N-body simulations are discussed. Discreteness noise in the halo, similar to that due to a population of 106M⊙ black holes, can produce observable warping. Details are discussed in an associated paper.

We study a possible formation mechanism for elliptical/S0 galaxies using N-body simulations with GRAPE. A close galaxy encounter which does not lead to a merger can induce a strong bar in an initially axisymmetric disk. This bar is unstable to bending oscillations and loses angular momentum to the dark halo. After 6 Gyrs the remnant is spheroidal with a de Vaucouleurs-type surface density profi...

We examine the claim by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) that the local halo density of white dwarfs is an order of magnitude higher than previously thought. As it stands, the observational data support the presence of a kinematically distinct population of halo white dwarfs at the >99% confidence level. A maximum-likelihood analysis gives a radial velocity dispersion a of σ h U =150 +80 −40 km s −1 a...

We report 0. ′′ 5 × 0. ′′ 9 resolution, interferometric observations of the 1.3 mm CO J=2→1 line in the infrared luminous galactic merger NGC 6240 2. About half of the CO flux is concentrated in a rotating but highly turbulent, thick disk structure centered between the two radio and near-infrared nuclei. A number of gas features connect this ∼500 pc diameter central disk to larger scales.

Secondary infall in galaxies could cause the angular momentum of the outer halo to change its orientation. The generation of warps due to this effect is studied using N-body simulations.

Our Galaxy is a barred spiral. Recent work based on the COBE NIR data implies a small bulge–bar and a disk with a short scale-length. The corotation radius of the bar is in the range 3–4.5 kpc. The stellar density distribution beyond the end of the bar appears to be perturbed strongly by the Galaxy’s spiral arms. Gas flow calculations in corresponding potentials provide a qualitative explanatio...
